Skolex has completed its first full year of of transforming coffee grounds into soil nutrients, saving approximately 18,000 pounds or 9 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
Skolex Biotechnologies mission is to develop technologies that support closed loop recycling, helping communities focus on recycling locally, growing locally, and eating locally. Recycling organic waste locally and transforming it into other products such as plant soil amendments and fertilizers is a key part of the equation.
When food waste is sent to a landfill it is buried in conditions without oxygen. The coffee decomposes and produces CO2 and methane. For each pound of coffee grounds that is repurposed, we save 2.5 pounds of CO2 emission. Composting 350 pounds saves 875 pounds of CO2 or .397 metric tons!
Dr. Ken Hughes, CEO said “We are tremendously excited about the success we have had to date and our partnerships with local companies in this effort, and look forward to our continued growth and expansion”.
